Investigation of the implementation of Total Quality Management in preschool education: the example of Nursery and Child Care Centers
Abstract
Modern theories focusing on child development have highlighted the important impact of preschool education on the child's developmental, psychomotor, mental and socio-emotional course. Furthermore, at the same time, developments in the fields of psychology, pedagogy and technology are establishing new conditions and increasing society's demands for improved educational services. The present study focuses on the views of preschool educators on the application of the principles of Total Quality Management in Early Childhood Education and Care as a means of improving the quality of education and care services offered. The survey involved 150 preschool teachers of various specializations working in 29 Nursery and Child Care Centers of Central and Southern Athens in Attica. Data collection was conducted through a questionnaire. Results reveal that many of the characteristics of the Total Quality Management are applied informally to Child Centres. Most importantly, however, the results reveal that the views of the preschool teachers on the quality of education are closely linked to the philosophy, principles, practices and techniques of the Total Quality Management model.
