Abstract

The question that this article attempts to answer concerns the efforts of Kostas Mountakis for the reform of Physical Education and Sports in Greece, along with the recording of his overall professional and scientific activity. Both during his tenure at the Pedagogical Institute and in all the related reform efforts he participated, his contribution to the formulation of educational policy is considered particularly important to be characterized as one of the founders of Physical Education Sciences in the country. Indicatively, it is mentioned that: a) He supported scientifically, as the most specialized (with relevant studies in England), the reform and modernization of the Physical Education Curricula of Primary and Secondary Education, according to which Swedish Gymnastics was abolished and the sports-centric model was introduced. b) He Promoted, through its scientific/research publications and training the modern theories on teaching methods and Motor Learning. c) He was responsible of the Ministry of Education for the introduction of Olympic Education in school. The program of the Olympic Education gave new life to physical education, while all methods of differentiated teaching, which nowadays are points of reference for other subjects, have their source in Olympic Education. d) He was for fourteen years an elected member of the Executive Committee of the International School Sports Federation (ISF). From this position he helped to promote changes in the organization of school sports at home and abroad.
