Abstract
This article presents an overview of the history of children's cinema and film from the late 19th century to the present day. The article highlights the important film periods in children's film history, the films themselves, and their child stars. It also includes a discussion of a number of issues that have surfaced over the last hundred years or so in children's films, including the recent wave of multicultural children's films, along with many contemporary works of children's literature, as a vehicle for driving home social change.
