Abstract
Examining the pattern of writing for the letters of the Hellenic alphabet (Teacher's Book - Class A, 1994), it was noticed that the direction of the writing strokes for some of the letters was improper. The suggested direction of the strokes does not ensure the economical and effective reproduction (or copying) of the letters and forces the pupils to raise the pencil - many times - from the paper. Therefore, the suggested pattern of writing does not provide the opportunity to the pupils for combining letter's lines to one stroke. In order to investigate the pattern of writing that elementary school pupils use, the letters β, δ, θ, Δ, M and Ν were used. 756 pupils (126 pupils per class) from 7 different elementary schools (6 puplic, 1 private) were participated in the study. The results revealed that pupils used 28 different ways for writing Letter 6, 11 for Letter δ, 19 for Letter a, 31 for Letter Δ, 20 for Letter M, and 15 for Letter N. It was also found that instead of the suggested pattern of writing, the majority of pupils preferred writing the aforementioned letters with one specific stroke in all classes. Taking into consideration (a) the applied writing rules at the elementary school, (b) the theories and the principles of the psychology of motor learning and behavior, and (c) the results of this study, some additional writing rules are proposed for economical and effective reproduction of the letters of the Hellenic alphabet.
