«Car For Boys, Doll For Girls?» Researching Preschool-Teachers’ Perceptions Of Toy- Object In Kindergarten

Abstract
Since the day they are born, children are inundated by toys that are appropriate for their gender. Pink Barbie for girls, blue war toys and vehicles for boys. The aim of this study was to examine the way preschool teachers perceive gender and toy- objects. Sixteen preschool teachers from Volos constitute the sample of this research. The method used for collecting data is the qualitative by conducting semi- structured interviews, whereas their processing was carried out by thematic analysis. The research findings indicate that the stereotypical views about toys for girls and toys for boys effect the perceptions of preschool-teachers. In some cases the traditional perceptions are in transformation, as there are research participants who are wondering about more effective ways of handling these issues in every day school actions.
