Therapy through education and education through therapy in group
Abstract
Under the spectrum of psychoanalytic theory and in particular Bion’s theory on thought, this paper highlights a number of basic similarities between the educational and the therapeutic experience within a group. This means that, on a personal as well as interpersonal level, both experiences deal with various processes involving production and the subjective conquest of sense, in association with the notions of historicity and inter-subjectivity.
Moreover, the paper examines whether, and in what sense, the inter-subjective educational experience may be considered to have collateral therapeutic results, and whether the members of a group can also reap
educational benefits within the group therapy environment.
