Historical inquiry approach. Developing historical competences

Abstract
The development of historical thinking and historical consciousness are the main objectives of modern historical education. History curricula in Greek primary school outline for students a less participatory role and methodological approaches focus more on declarative than procedural knowledge. Historical inquiry as a method can encourage the active participation of students in the creative synthesis of historical research.
Historical inquiry can contribute to a critical reflective aspect of the past by recognizing new connections with the present. The described research examines the implementation of different types of historical inquiry - based learning in the school class, in particular confirmation inquiry, structured inquiry, guided inquiry, open-ended inquiry in history teaching. Important findings are highlighted regarding the effectiveness of each research type in enhancing interest of primary school students for historical learning and the development of historical competences.
