Investigating the Intercultural Competence of Future Preschool Teachers: A Quantitative Approach through Creative Vignettes
Abstract
This study explores the intercultural competence of students in a department of early childhood education, who are in the final year of their studies and have completed their teaching practicum. The research focuses on how these future educators approach culturally sensitive situations within the context of their professional role. A quantitative methodological approach is adopted, based on the creative use of scenario-based vignettes. Through these vignettes, participants were asked to express their level of agreement or disagreement with proposed ways of handling pedagogical-educational incidents, according to their own understanding of intercultural education. The data analysis revealed a dominant trend among students toward accepting a superficial approach to intercultural education, as well as an approach based on recognition policies, in contrast to a more citizenship-oriented pedagogy. The findings highlight the importance of using creative, pedagogically targeted tools—such as vignettes—in initial teacher education, as they strengthen the connection between formal learning and the development of critical thinking, as well as the ability to promote inclusion and respect for diversity in contemporary education.
