Three greek spectacle films: cracks in the utopia of the long ‘60s
Abstract
In this article three Greek films of the 1960s are studied: Athens by Night (1962), Night Walks (1964) and Athens After Midnight (1968). In these three movies, which form a new sub-genre, the «spectacle film», the Athenian nightlife is presented through an anthology semi-documentary form, with nightclub shots and fiction episodes which are interconnected through voiceover. By an interaction between high and popular culture, tradition and Western influences and the relation between a conservative and a progressive discourse, the films capture the utopia of the 1960s. This utopia emerged gradually and with difficulties, through the democratization of socio-political life and the influence of western long sixties, on culture, mentality and daily life, but it was finally entrenched within the ideological hegemony of the Dictatorship. These three spectacle films depict the formation and also the limits of the Greek long sixties utopia.
