Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to investigate both the degree and the way of using the video by the teachers of primary school as educational material and the qualitative assessment of the videos they use based on qualitative criteria. To achieve this, a mixed research method divided into two stages was followed. The first included a poll-type survey, with a questionnaire from which data was collected about the degree of use, the way, the video selection criteria and also video URLs that respondents said they use in teaching. The second stage of the research involved the quantitative content analysis of these videos, by two researchers based on an observation-rubric protocol that examines qualitative criteria. Data were collected from 150 teachers and special education teachers, and 94 video URLs, of which 42 were finally examined for quality characteristics by two researchers. From the results of the research, it appears that Greek teachers often use videos in teaching, recognizing the added pedagogical value of the medium, but do not always make optimal and correct use of it. Furthermore, although they seem to carefully select videos they are going to show so that the content corresponds to the reference group and the intended targets, they do not seem to have knowledge of the quality criteria suggested by the literature, resulting in the videos they end up using being of average quality .
