Abstract

The paper examines the iconography and style of the second layer of the wall-paintings in the diaconicon of the cathedral of Kalambaka (ancient Stagoi). The closest parallels are to be found in Saint Sophia of Ohrid (ca. 1052-1056), the archbishopric to which Stagoi belonged at that time. The Kalambaka wall-paintings also display certain new artistic characteristics that made their appearance in metropolitan art in the third quarter of the 11th century, which allows to date them to that period.
