The rare biographical cycle of Saint Stephen in the church of the same name at Drakona in Kissamos, Crete
Abstract
The church of Saint Stephen near the village of Drakona in Kissamos was decorated with wall-paintings in the second half of the 14th century. Aim of this study is to present the biographical cycle of Saint Stephen, which consists of three episodes, to seek the models used by the artist and to point out his working methods. On the basis of the peculiarities of the iconographic program, assumptions are made on the status of the patron, while through the stylistic analysis of the frescoes is attempted their connection with the local artistic production.
