Abstract

Architectural remains of an Early Byzantine monumental building with marble monolithic pillars and brick-built lateral walls have been recently unearthed to the north of the eastern part of the Early Byzantine Episcopal basilica of Thessaloniki. This paper presents the new findings and introduces some observations, thoughts, as well as questions about the architectural design of this, unknown until now, public edifice, and the possible monumental development of the urban space in this area during the Early Byzantine period.
