Abstract

The church of the Protaton at Karyes, Mount Athos, which has acquired its present form after a long series of alterations, was built in the sixth decade of the 10th century. In its original form it was a large-scale peculiar timber-roofed cross-shaped basilica, which, based on the currently available evidence, constitutes a unicum for Middle Byzantine architecture, as well as one more proof of the existence of originality in Byzantine architecture. The aim of the paper is a reexamination of the construction history and architecture of the monument based mainly on field work.
