Monastic establishments on the island of Chalke in the Dodecanese from the middle Byzantine period to the end of the period of the Knights
Abstract
Hermits took refuge on the north coast of Chalke, Dodecanese, since about the middle of the 6th century. In the Byzantine period and the period of the Knights, hermits, monks, and nuns settled in the hinterland, mainly around Chorio, the medieval/post-Byzantine village, and below the castle of the knights. They built chapel-shaped hermitages, “kathismata” and a kind of “primitive monasteries”, which consist of a chapel and a few “kyphes”, the stone huts of the island. Monastic use of chapels has been identified based on specific criteria.
