The scripts of the known Βyzantine painters of Crete. The case of Theodoros Daniel
Abstract
The paper examines the script used by the painter Theodoros Daniel as it appears in the two works signed by him: the Panagia Faneromeni at Hagios Ioannis in the province of Mylopotamos, and the church of the Transfiguration of Christ (Christos) at Meskla in the province of Kydonia, dated in 1303. The authors propose improved readings of the founders’ inscriptions and stress the importance of understanding the morphology of the letters, because it constitutes an additional tool for identifying the work of a particular painter
