Palaiologan relief of Christ Emmanuel from the collection of Hadrian’s Library in Athens
Abstract
In the collection of the archaeological site of Hadrian’s Library in Agora of Ancient Athens, a fragmentary surviving relief is kept with a representation of Christ Emmanuel in a bust. According to its iconographic and stylistic features, it probably comes from the decoration of a burial monument and was created in a workshop in Constantinople during the first decades of the 14th century. The way and time in which this high quality sample of Palaiologan sculpture arrived in Athens, are questions that are not easy to answer.
