Fifteenth-century icons in Zakynthos
Abstract
The article discusses four panel icons from the collection of Zakynthos’ Museum. Three out of the four were unpublished and one of out of this ensemble is being reconsidered in terms of dating. These are the Annunciation, St. George killing the dragon, the Virgin of the Passion and the Madre della Consolazione. All four of them, according to the iconographic, stylistic and artistic observations made, can be dated in the 15th century. This ensemble raises by far the number of 15th-century icons that have been treasured in Zakynthos when compared to the other Ionian Islands. The latter suggests that Zakynthos was both prosperous and a host state for the great numbers of the Greek Orthodox refugees since the middle of the 15th century.
