Abstract

The church of Saint Theodosia in Naxos houses the icon of the homonym saint in its templon iconostasis. The icon represents the saint in the typical frontal pose, dressed in the nun’s garments and holding a cross. The icon according to the iconographic evidence gathered from other depictions of the saint and its style can be dated roughly to the early 15th century. Special mention, however, is being made to the scarf of the saint which is thought to be an iconographic inspiration drawn from her martyrdom as it can be attested by her encomia and vita, and which can be used as an identity marker for the saint.
