Two byzantine pseudo-sarcophagi in the village of Koumeika on Samos
Abstract
The two marble rectangular slabs that have been placed on the fountain of the village of Koumeika on Samos probably comprise part of the sides of one or two sarcophagi, which can be dated to the end of the 10th century or to the beginning of the 11th century. The main message of their decorative themes is the promotion of the Arma Christias symbols of the martyrdom and resurrection of Christ. At the same time, the presence of these slabs indicates that a monastery existed nearby, which has not yet been located.
