The Hypapante church at Stratigato on Chios. Data on an unpublished byzantine monument
Abstract
At Stratigato, Chios, a kilometre outside the village of Daphnonas, there is the church of Hypapante. The church was built after the great earthquake of 1881 over the ruins of a previous one. According to the evidence provided by the marble-paved floor of it, it can be assumed that the latter is a copy of that of Nea Moni. Further advancing the above discovery it can be presumed that the church of Hypapante was also of the “insular” octagonal type and could have been built after the middle of the 11th century and before 1346 when the island was conquered by the Genoese.
