An archaeological survey at the Epano Kastro of Andros. Some considerations
Abstract
The island of Andros has three castles, two of which the Kato Kastro on the islet of Chora and the castle of Makrotantalos were founded by the Venetians. However, for the third castle, the Epano Kastro there is no mention but in an archival document of 1385 which verifies its existence during the same period. The archaeological survey on the castle so far has brought to light nothing but findings of the 13th to 15th centuries. The mapping of the building remnants of the castle has defined houses, cisterns or other structures among which a chapel built in the neighbouring area of the church of Faneromeni. Judging from the so far evidence it is presumed that the Epano Kastro must have been built contemporarily with the other two.
