Icons signed by Emmanuel Lambardos in the Benaki Museum
Abstract
The icon of the Virgin of the Tenderness is the point of departure for a comparative analysis of four more icons from the collection of the Βenaki Museum. The scope of this analysis is to define which one of the two painters named Emmanuel Lambardos, who were relatives and synonymous, has executed which work. The first part of this study examines in brief the works from an iconographic and stylistic point of view and the attributions attempted are based on the above evidence. The second part of the study presents the results of the physico-chemical analysis of these works, which corroborate the attributions proposed in the first part.
