An unpublished triptych by Georgios Klontzas and its recipient
Abstract
The central part of a triptych from the collection of the J. F. Willumsmen Museum, Frederikssund, Denmark is the object of this article. The surviving part of the triptych is remarkable not only for its miniature painting but also for its style, both of which lead to attribute it to the Cretan painter Georgios Klontzas. Furthermore, the depiction of the coat of arms of the Tiepolo family suggests that this triptych was destined as a donation to the duke of Crete Ermolao Tiepolo. Hence, if this assumption is true, then the triptych can be securely dated in the first semester of 1580.
