The illustration of the miraculous arrival of the icon of the Panagia Portaïtissa at Iviron monastery on Mount Athos
Abstract
The icon of the Portaitissa, the palladium of the Iviron monastery, is a highly revered icon and it is linked to a miraculous legend about its arrival on Mount Athos. This miraculous arrival is illustrated on an icon held at the repository of the Iviron monastery (Cat. No.247). The depiction of geographical and historical details of the legend is what attracts the attention. It is remarkable that such details were included in order to fully illustrate this legend. In terms of rendering the geographical space, the painter may have consulted a Ptolemaic map as it can be assumed. The folklore style of the painting suggests a dating towards the middle of the 18th century.
