Abstract

Due to the discovery of the reference to a certain painter from Thessaloniki called «kyr Manuel» in a document of the Vatopedi Monastery, whose identification with a man of the same name in documents dated 1323 and 1338 is apparent, his identification with the painter «kyr Manuel Panselinos» is suggested, as is the reexamination of the chronology of the wall paintings of the Protaton at Karyes on Mt. Athos. A catalogue of dates during which the conditions were favorable for the painting of the church is included and the periods just after 1308 or 1322 are proposed to be the more favourable ones.
