Abstract

In the initial painted decoration of St. Athanasios (1546), themes are drawn from the Byzantine tradition in the broader region. Some of the iconographical elements are particularly rare, such as the representation of Christ in the Entry into Jerusalem and in the Dormition, as well as the distich iambic epigrams of Christopher of Mytilene, used to comment on the depicted scenes. In addition, the common roots ascertained between the anonymous painter of St. Athanasios and the painter Eustathios Iakovou of Epiros point to the direction of their identification.
