The evolution of cloisonné masonry in Chios
Abstract
This article presents fourteen cases of precisely-dated churches and secular buildings on the island that were built in the cloisonné masonry system in two variants, one unfinished (pseudo-cloisonné) and a more elaborate one. On the basis of dated examples, an initial attempt is made to date 21 other monuments built using the same technique; in addition, there emerged a number of results concerning the evolution of this sort of masonry on the island.
