An initial presentation of the wall paintings in the church of Hagioi Theodoroi in Archangelos, Rhodes (1372)
Abstract
The church of Hagioi Theodoroi in Archangelos, Rhodes, dated by inscription to 1372, is one of the most important monuments of the Knights (1309-1522), not only for the island of Rhodes, but for the other islands in the Dodecanese. The church preserves full iconographic program, the founders’ inscription, and a representation of the founders. Special emphasis is given to the group of military saints depicted in military attire with their weapons. The unusual epithet of the founder Irene as Atoumissa and the number of earrings she is wearing are of interest.
