Following the footsteps of Dionysios of Fourna
Abstract
This article examines the artistic and literary production of Dionysios of Fourna in an attempt to evaluate him and his work. It focuses on his key works, which help us to understand the scale of his contribution to the artistic creation in the first half of the 18th century. What does Dionysios represent in the artistic production of the 18th century? Or, more importantly, what new did he bring to the religious art of the 18th century? In this context details about his life are discussed, which allow a better understanding of his work. Finally, this article investigates the question to what degree does the Hermeneia [the Painter’s Manual] help us in understanding Dionysios of Fourna as an artist, as well as his contribution to the artistic and generally the spiritual environment of his time.
