Developing multimodal communication in a toddlers' classroom through drawing activity
Abstract
The present study presents a program that aimed to enhance young children (2.5 years) to combine different resources together to express themselves in multimodal ways. By systematically observing and recording children's spontaneous drawing efforts, teachers initially sought to understand how they use their drawings to express their thinking and how they communicate the content of their drawings to others. By giving children multiple opportunities to communicate meanings through drawings and constructions, a new classroom culture of communication was formed, and their multimodal expression seemed to improve significantly including oral speech, body language, gestures, drawings and constructions.
