Abstract

The phenomenon of school bullying has received great attention in the global educational world, as it is still considered one of the biggest challenges that school children need to overcome today. As the literature indicates, many anti-bullying school programs focus on informing students about the phenomenon and helping them develop social and emotional skills as a means of preventing and limiting violence among members of the school community. The purpose of this study was to develop a music education program for the prevention of the phenomenon of school bullying in secondary education. In the first part, a literature review was conducted on anti-bullying educational programs in order to explore ways in which the arts and music in particular may help the educational community to deal with the problem. Taking into account the critical evaluation of previously implemented bullying prevention and intervention programs, principles and key elements for the implementation of such efforts have emerged. Therefore, an original music education program was developed and implemented by the researchers. The aim of the program was to raise students’ awareness about school bullying. The sample was a group of seven students, classmates from a class of middle school (Gymnasio) Year 3, within the region of the Ionian Islands. All students participated voluntarily, after parental consent. The program lasted for six weeks and was implemented virtually, due to the restrictions of the pandemic (Covid-19). The program was developed around two pre-selected music videos that dealt with the bullying problem. The aim of the program was to inform students about school bullying and help them build socio-emotional skills in relation to self-resilience towards the phenomenon. All conversations through the six-week educational program were recorded, transcribed and analyzed thematically. Results indicate that students reached a deeper understanding of the bullying phenomenon, recognized many characteristics and dimensions of the problem, and gave possible solutions to possible situations. Using the music video as an educational tool helped students gain familiarity with the phenomenon and gave them the opportunity to develop bullying management skills. This educational program, based on two music videos, highlights the need to promote students’ free expression in order to reduce the bullying phenomenon in schools. It also shows that students of secondary education in particular need opportunities within the school environment to express themselves musically and aesthetically, to develop strong peer bonds and good social skills. Moreover, they need to be given a safe space with the presence of their teachers to explore, discuss and improve their self-resilience skills so as to develop a critical stance towards the phenomenon.
