E-communication between school and family during COVID-19 pandemic
Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented global condition with multiple effects in all areas of human life. The effects of the pandemic also concern school and family communication, which has been transformed into an electronic one. This paper deals with school-family communication during the COVID-19 pandemic in secondary education, as captured by school principals. In particular, it examines: a) the electronic media adopted, b) the topics of communication during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic in relation to the previous time period, c) the evaluation of the way of conducting the electronic school-family communication, d) the urbanism of the school area in the communication, and e) if there are differences based on the demographics of the sample and the type of school served by the principals (general and special education schools). The study is quantitative research. The sample was 62 secondary school principals (65.7% men and 32.3% women, with an average age of 53.2 years). A self-report questionnaire was provided for data collection. Data analysis was based on quantitative methods. The research showed that the COVID-19 pandemic brought about significant changes in school-family communication, which is distinguished by a wide variety of electronic media and practices. Communication issues have been reshaped and affected by the crisis situation. Distance learning dominates the subject of school and family communication. The attitude of the family and the students towards electronic communication, as evaluated by the principals, was mainly positive. The urbanism of the school area determined the means and the ways of communication. Finally, no statistically significant differences were observed in the responses of principals based on gender, age, and type of school they serve (general and special education schools). Research suggests that the COVID-19 pandemic brought about a variety of changes in communication between secondary schools and family.
