The 'Odyssey' of pedagogical competence of Secondary teachers in Greece
Abstract
The teacher today is called upon to carry out his pedagogical and teaching work, so that high quality education is achieved for all students. Therefore, the excellent knowledge of the subject he teaches is not enough, in order to cope with the complex role he undertakes, but his sufficient pedagogical and teaching competence is necessary. However, the pedagogical competence of Secondary teachers is still a demand, and not only for the Greek educational system. Regarding the Greek reality, the pedagogical competence of Secondary Education teachers - despite the 25-year effort to ensure and consolidate it - still presents many shortcomings, contradictions and raises questions and conflicts. The purpose of this article is to outline the practices and policies regarding the assurance of the pedagogical and didactic competence of Secondary teachers through the study of the relevant institutional framework on the one hand and on the other hand through the study of the study programs of the Departments whose graduates have the right to work in Secondary schools.
