Parents’ Perspectives on the Role of Visual Arts in Primary and Secondary Education
Abstract
Art education shapes students in their entirety and offers opportunities for the contemporary orientations of 21st century’s education to be served. However, the art subject holds a low status in the Greek educational system and it is often treated as “secondary”. Reversing this reality proves difficult, as the marginalization of the arts stems from a multitude of factors. These include parents, who play a fundamental role in the educational process. Instead of acting as catalysts for change, parents often co-shape and reproduce the hierarchy of academic subjects, contributing to the perpetuation of this mindset. With this rationale in mind, the present study - in which 229 parents of primary and/or secondary school students participated - aimed to investigate parents' attitudes towards the Art subject, their opinions on its content, and their degree of satisfaction with the art education their children receive. The research findings offer valuable insights for designing educational policies intended to effectively upgrade arts education.
