Abstract
The impact of earthquakes and other stressful life events on children and adolescents is discussed. Review of clinical data obtained from physical disasters provides the diagnostic indicators and resulting psychopathology in victims of earthquakes. Affective, including posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, fears, and anxieties, cognitive, behavioral, and psychosomatic problems were found to be prevailing. A model for the understanding of posttraumatic stress disorder is discussed. A brief and structured psychotherapeutic treatment approach is presented. The conclusion is that treatment alleviates symptoms.
