Ενώ το ζήτημα της σχολικής ετοιμότητας κερδίζει έδαφος σε όλο τον κόσμο, εξακολουθούν να αιωρούνται πολλά ζητήματα που συνδέονται με μια συνεκτική αντίληψη της έννοιας και των εφαρμογών της στην βελτίωση της μάθησης και ανάπτυξης όλων των παιδιών, στην ποιότητα των εκπαιδευτικών ιδρυμάτων, και τη συμμετοχή των οικογενειών και των κοινοτήτων στην εκπαίδευση των παιδιών τους. Η παρούσα μελέτη επιχειρεί έναν ευρύτερο θεωρητικό επαναπροσδιορισμό της έννοιας της σχολικής ετοιμότητας στηριζόμενο στο οικοσυστημικό μοντέλο για τη μετάβαση του παιδιού από το νηπιαγωγείο στο δημοτικό σχολείο. Η μελέτη των σχετικών ερευνών αναδεικνύει τη σημαντικότητα της επίδρασης των χαρακτηριστικών της οικογένειας, της γειτονιάς και της ποιότητας της παρεχόμενης φροντίδας και ανάπτυξης στον παιδικό σταθμό και το νηπιαγωγείο στη σχολική ετοιμότητα του παιδιού και ιδιαίτερα στις γνωστικές δεξιότητες και την κοινωνικο-συναισθηματική επάρκεια αυτού.
