Complementary distance education for Primary School Students. An Action Research on lesson compensation occasionally absent from the school class students
Abstract
In our times, which have been characterized as times of the “Society of Knowledge”, everyone involved in the educational process ought to ask themselves about the knowledge and skills provided by the Greek educational system and whether this knowledge is sufficient for tomorrow’s citizen. Accumulating knowledge is a matter of the past; a future citizen has to have critical thinking, communicative and cooperative abilities in order to be able to handle whatever knowledge s/he receives, in the right way and to her/his benefit, through the ongoing contact and co-operation with groups of common interests (Smith & Lovat, 2003). A reconsideration of the educational system is needed so as to focus on teaching the learners “how to learn”. IT in the educational process is what might constitute the means through which learners will be trained to search for and discover knowledge.
The present research is aimimg at studying the incorporation of complementary distance learning in primary education which is used for lessons replenishment for students that are occasionally absent from school. In implementing this, the educational platform edmodo has been utilized.Through the platform, absent learners are informed occasionally about the already taught lessons in the class room, as well as about any complementary material in order for them to study on their own at home. In addition, each learner is given the option to express any query they may have concerning the lesson to be studied. In order for this to be achieved, an 8-month action research was conducted, which was incorporated into the innovative actions of the school.
