Structural Transitions and Polycrisis in the Global Economy: Challenges for Regional Economic Integration

It is widely aknowledged that the global political and economic system is going through a period of multiple transitions. Economic, social and technological changes are radically transforming the power structures in the world, while major economic actors engage in a geopolitical competition trying to control the transition into a new international order. The intensity of structural shocks and the multiple and multilevel challenges they entail, as well as the inability of existing global governance mechanisms to respond, are reflected in the concept of "polycrisis". The new complex reality that is emerging has already activated forces of economic nationalism and de-globalization tendencies that may further strengthen the dynamics of regional integration observed in recent decades. On the other hand, this new environment poses significant challenges for existing regional integration institutions and partnerships, as geo-economic competitions create pressures to redesign their goals and actions, both internally and in relation to external actors, including other regional initiatives.

The Scientific Review "Regional Integration: Politics, Economics & Governance" announces a call for research papers that include empirical studies and theoretical contributions that study different aspects of the International Political Economy, in transition, and contribute to the understanding of the latter’s implications for regional economic integration.

Indicatively, but not exclusively, topics of interest are:

  • Theoretical approaches and interpretations of systemic change and its relation to processes of regionalization and regionalism.
  • Characteristics of structural changes (digital transition, energy – green transition, global production, global financial system, international security) and their impact on existing regional integration institutions and partnerships.
  • The management of international crises by regional economic institutions and actors.
  • Emerging realities of power and wealth and their implications for global and regional governance.
  • The EU's new role in the emerging geo-economic competition.
  • The new world economy: (de)globalization, economic nationalism, regionalism.

The special issue that will host the articles accepted for publication will be the first issue of the Scientific Review "Regional Integration: Politics, Economics & Governance". The review will be a new edition, based on the established review "Region and Periphery" published by the Research Center for Economic Policy, Governance and Development (EKOPDA) of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

The new review aspires to become a key pillar of scientific research and cooperation of the new initiative for the creation of the Greek Network of International and European Political Economy (EDDEPO) with the participation of scientists and researchers from Greece and abroad.

The journal is hosted on the ejournals platform of the National Documentation Centre (EKT) and is open access, free of charge for authors and readers.

The article submission deadline is August 31, 2023.
