Dissertation: Space Policy and Security in Europe

Aggeliki Papadimitriou
Abstract

Space was the focus of two superpowers during the Cold War, and has since been the subject of international competition with Moscow and Washington interested in conquering it. The causes of the competition were more military than scientific, as both America and the Soviet Union perceived space dominance as a means of allowing one superpower to dominate another. Today, without being widely known, space is an integral part of people's daily lives as it is used, among other things, for telecommunications, meteorology, navigation, satellite television. However, space activities are inherently of dual-use—civilian and military. Beyond its day-to-day dimension, space is a critical sector affecting national security and defense issues.
