Abstract

This research note critically assesses the accession path of the Western Balkan states to the European Union (EU), presenting the progress they have made in terms of accession chapters, the main challenges of enlargement, as well as their accession prospects. It argues that the overall integration of the Western Balkan countries into the EU will be significantly delayed, that emphasis should be placed on the fundamental accession chapters, and that the EU should proceed with institutional reforms to facilitate future decision-making on sensitive issues.
