Messages parents convey to their children and the underlying significance for family social work
Abstract
The present article focuses on communication issues and values transmission in the family. The importance of messages parents communicate in the form of advice, is thoroughly explored. In the following text, the answers given by seventy (70) students of the Department of Social Work of the Democritus University of Thrace, to the question on what was the main advice given by their parents during their upbringing, are presented and analyzed.
The analysis of the advice has a dual purpose: the interpretation in terms of content and the exploration of the possible ways they might have influenced respondents’ behaviors and attitudes. The given advice is also examined as indicators of the value system of the modern Greek family, as result of the cultural, social and economic changes of recent years. Emphasis is given on their importance in the practice of counseling in family social work and the value of raising parents' awareness on issues concerning communication of messages to their children. Additionally, the results of the study certainly indicate the importance of family counseling; along with the basic parameters for social work education regarding the need for identification and management of students’ personal experiences.
