Abstract

In the large village of Sofiko, Korinthia, an exceptionally interesting group of monuments survives which is appropriate for consideration of the thorny issue of distinguishing thirteenth-century from twelfth-century architectural elements. It includes at least five churches on the outskirts of the village. This article aims to offer a fuller presentation of those construction and morphological elements which document the close relationship of this particular monumental group and lend support to its dating in the thirteenth century. Individual morphological elements are examined in the construction of domes, windows and pseudo-windows, and in the way ceramic vessels are immured on the facades of the churches in the region
with comparisons to other monuments from southern Greece.
