Abstract
The large two-sided processional icon of the Byzantine Museum, an excellent work of the early 14th century, is the first icon known with a representation of the Three Hierarchs. This article traces related works and parallels to the rare iconological composition of the Panagia Hodegetria and the Three Hierarchs and investigates the characteristics of the icon’s iconography and style. Its relation to the decorations of the church of the Holy Apostles in Thessaloniki and the Chora monastery in particular lead to the view that it was a work of the same period by a Constantinopolitan master, perhaps painted for a high church official in Constantinople or Thessaloniki.
