Abstract

The paintings of David Selenitsiotis in Hagios Ioannis Prodromos in Kastoria (1727). Comments and remarks.

Τhe paper deals with the painting of the church of Saint John the Forerunner (Hagios Ioannis Prodromos) in Kastoria, a work by David Selenitsiotis. According to the donor inscription, the wall paintings are dated in 1727 and the iconographic programme follows the established layout for single-aisled post-Byzantine churches. The depictions of allegorical scenes, such as the Wheel and the Tree of the Life, the parables of Christ and the punishments of sinners are of particular interest. The wall paintings belong to the movement of the return to the art of the Palaiologean period, although the painter presents a particular personal style.
