Apollo and the Virgin Mary’s “δόμος”. Comments on a Late Antique oracle
Abstract
This article discusses the Apollonian oracle that predicted the conversion of a pagan temple into a church (“δόμος”) dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The oracle is linked to the Third Ecumenical Council of Ephesus (431). The latent relationship of Athens and of Apollonius of Tyana to the oracle is also discussed. The Cyzicus version of the oracle, in which reference is made to Cybele, is interpreted through the history of Constantinople and the replacement of the cult of the Mother of Gods by that of the Virgin Mary and of other female saints in Asia Minor.
