An unknown cistern of the public water supply system of Byzantine Thessaloniki in the area of Hagios Nikolaos Orfanos

Abstract
This paper presents an –unknown so far– cistern of the water supply system of Byzantine Thessaloniki, excavated to the east of the Hagios Nikolaos Orfanos monastic church, which seems to have functioned for centuries as a local water distribution center in the eastern residential sector of the Byzantine and later Ottoman city.
