Ein säulen-Fragment in der Bagrati Kathedrale In Kutaisi (A column fragment in the Bagrati Cathedral In Kutaisi)

Abstract
The fragment of a column made of Thessalicum marble (marmor Thessalicum) in Kutaisi found in the ruins of the cathedral of Kutaisi (ancient Kytaia) in Georgia founded by King Bagrat in 1003 is one of the few so far known monuments of such material in the entire region Black Sea. According to Procopius (De aedificiis) it appears that the emperor Justinian during the strengthening of the borders in the war against the Sassanids around 540 AD. built the cathedral of Kytaia and may have dedicated to it at least one ciborium with columns of Thessalian marble and probably the apse mosaic, of which some inlay stones have survived.
