Le «proskynitère» sculpté de l'église de Saint Georges à la porteresse de Geraki
Abstract
‘The sculpted «proskenytarion» in the church of Saint George of the Castle on Geraki’
The article examines the building phases of the church of Saint George of the castle on Geraki as well as its sculpted “proskenytarion” along with a brief summary of the views that were once proposed by the scholarly research for the latter. The re-examination of the different features of the monument along with observations concerning its decorative patterns and heraldic symbols lead to the attribution of at least one of the latter to the Aragonese family of Inigo d'Alfero, Knight of the Hospital and official of the Grand Master Juan Fernández de Heredia and to the suggestion that the so-called ‘proskenytarion’ is a sepulchral monument for members of his family. Furthermore, the historic conjunctures of the Frankish Peloponnese, which had brought the Hospitaller knights there during the years 1378 to 1381 as its managers and prospective owners, enhance such a assumption.
