Remarks on an encolpium in the Vatopedi monastery
Abstract
Among the treasures in the possession of the Vatopedi monastery on Mount Athos is a luxurious encolpium of the twelfth-thirteenth century, set with an amethyst cameo representing the Virgin Hagiosoritissa in bust. On the back of the silver mount of the gem, which is gilded and embellished with precious stones, is an engraved cross surrounded by an incised inscription which continues on the edge of the mount. Observations on the content of the inscription, the iconography and the material of the cameo advocate the hypothesis that the encolpium was a curative amulet against drunkenness, which belonged to a prosperous member of the Byzantine society.
